Description

I'm always trying for a new, quick style to draw comics. This style is not my favorite but I hope people can catch my humor. Of course, you should know the story before understanding this comic.

This is an Indonesian folktale called "Jaka Tarub and Nawang Wulan."

Jaka Tarub is a hunter who lives in the forest. One day, he sees 7 fairy girls bathing in a pond. He steals one of their shawls and hides it. The fairy (named Nawang Wulan), who can't find her shawl to fly with, cannot go home. Jaka Tarub shows himself to her and comforts her, pretending not to know who takes the shawl. In time, they marry and have a daughter called Nawangsih. However, one day, Nawang Wulan finds her shawl in the barn where Jaka Tarub hid it. She scolds her husband and flies back to her home in the sky, promising to come back to take care of Nawangsih.

I thought it would be better if Nawang Wulan took Nawangsih to her home too. That way, she would be a more loving mother and she would not have to see Jaka Tarub again. :XD:

The father has the same face Donkey Skin's father would have the day he told his daughter who he wanted to marry...

Joking aside, stories about men stealing a supernatural maiden's clothing to force her to marry them is really common in worldwide folklore, from Japan to the Faroe Islands. One thing I like from the Javanese variant is the fact that the wife keeps her supernatural powers until her husband lets curiosity get the best of him. Definetly a better story for the moral of "don't meddle with your partner's business" than Perrault's Bluebeard...
